Thriving Firm Marks Major Milestone

05/05/26

In marking the huge milestone of 40 years in business, Track Industries is full of gratitude to stakeholders and staff — past and present — and is thankful to everyone who has been and continues to be pivotal to the company’s success. The company began in 1986, when John Martin and David Band acquired both the machining assets and the water pump business assets from the renowned Canterbury company, Andersons Engineering. Key staff from Andersons joined Track Industries, bringing over a century of experience, skills, and knowledge in engineering and manufacturing. John and David are still actively involved with the business as directors, adding extensive knowledge, contacts and input.

As the Track business name highlights, long-term customer NZ Railways was secured as an initial customer for Track Industries, and remains a loyal customer to this day. Today, Track has a wide range of customers, and chief financial officer Paul Martin says the company is grateful for the contribution of customers, agents, staff, suppliers, and directors who have helped build and support Track's business over its 40 years. “And we are set to work hard and deliver value for our customers in the next 40 years.” Today, there are 25 full-time equivalent staff, and while there are two separate divisions of Track, the group works together to deliver manufactured products and valuable services to customers throughout the New Zealand market.

The engineering division has vast manufacturing and repair capabilities, including CNC and conventional machining, component repair and salvage, reverse engineering, CAD/CAM and support, plus on-site fitting and workshop-based rebuilds. Clarke Washington manages the engineering operations and, through the operations team, brings extensive engineering and machining knowledge to bear, which Paul says helps solve challenging manufacturing and machining challenges for customers. BD engineering manager Danny Crawford says the focus is on making parts and also helping customers solve breakdowns, improve reliability, restore worn equipment and find workable answers to challenging jobs.

The technical expertise covers small to very large format CNC and manual mills, lathes, borers, and machining centres. “We can build small items up to really big items,” Danny says. “If it fits on the table, we can do it. There’s not much we can’t do.” “Because we’re a contract machine shop, we have the capability to do most things here. “Anything that needs a machine, we can build it.” They also offer mechanical site services where staff install and repair onsite. Reverse engineering also makes up part of the service, saving customers money on purchasing new equipment or parts.

The engineering business works alongside the Track pumps division, which was started 40 years ago with the Anderson range of pumps. The pump division specialises in manufacturing and supplying New Zealand-made pumps and spare parts for agricultural and industrial operations across New Zealand. The pump division is best known for its extensive range of proven and long-lasting
piston or reciprocating pumps, pumps manager Jason Martin says. “Over the years, we have invested in the pump side of the business, mostly through the acquisition of established and reliable brands like Prices Renown, Wallace Powerlo, MacEwan’s, Track B1&C1 Piston pumps. “It may be older technology; however, it’s proven, long-lasting and still has its place on New Zealand farms and businesses.”

“Most of our pumps are still around because they are really good at handling water with particles in it — or dirty water. The old-style pumps can handle it better, and no doubt that is why they have proven themselves over such a long time.” Over the past 40 years, Track has increased its offerings to include leather and synthetic cups, valve flow metres, well riser flanges, deep well gearings and cylinders, plus a range of other pumps and accessories.

Track sells and manufactures New Zealand-made brands such as Andersons, Wallace Powerflo, MacEwans H Series, WH Price Renown, Track B1 and C1 pumps, Track deep well cylinders and gearings, and Hayes windmills, and also supplies unique spares for Atritor pulverising mills and Anderson boilers. Irrigation products include irrigation flanges, hand priming pumps, pump water
end kit sets, Tulip, Leather and Towner piston cups, pressure tanks, external relief valves, gland packing, boiler consumables, Maric and inline valve filter metric water restrictor units, and drain test plugs.

Jason emphasises that Track’s extensive New Zealand-wide agent network is a big asset for end customers. “They successfully sell and maintain the Track range of pumps and spare parts, and
know the local environment, and can assist anyone with one of the Track pumps with servicing and installing. Thanks to all stakeholders for your help and involvement with Track over the years. You have all contributed and helped make Track the business it is today. Track and the team are looking forward to delivering to our customers, staff and all stakeholders for the next 40 years.”
